Join the Rio Grande Chapter of the Sierra Club for a guided educational hike exploring how wildfire, drought, and monsoon flooding have shaped the forests around Ruidoso over the past decade.
This moderate, 3.5-mile round-trip hike follows portions of the Cedar Creek trail system within the Smokey Bear Ranger District of the Lincoln National Forest. Along the way, participants will walk through areas visibly affected by recent fires while learning about forest recovery, trail restoration, and the ecological role of wildfire in the region.
Expect scenic viewpoints of Sierra Blanca, Ski Apache, and the Village of Ruidoso, along with the possibility of spotting elk or wild horses in the surrounding forest. The hike includes several interpretive stops where trip leader John Pijawka will discuss the history of fires in Lincoln County and their impact on the landscape.
Participants should wear sturdy footwear, bring water and sunscreen, and dress for changing mountain weather.
Registration is limited to ensure a small-group experience.
