Welcome to Ruidoso, New Mexico
Ruidoso is a four-season mountain destination in the Sacramento Mountains of Southern New Mexico. Located in Lincoln County at an official elevation of 6,920 feet, the Village combines mountain scenery and outdoor recreation with locally owned shops and restaurants, arts and culture, live entertainment, and a relaxed mountain-town atmosphere.
Each season brings something different. Winter means snow sports and cozy mountain getaways. Spring brings warmer days and trails to explore. Summer offers cool mountain mornings, lakes, outdoor recreation, live music, and events. Fall arrives with changing leaves, crisp air, and seasonal celebrations.

Mountains, Forests, Lakes, and Trails
Ruidoso’s setting is central to the experience of being here.
The Village sits within the Sacramento Mountains and is surrounded by the landscapes of the Lincoln National Forest and nearby public lands. Hiking and biking trails, mountain lakes, scenic drives, fishing, camping, horseback riding, skiing, and other outdoor experiences make it possible to build an entire trip around being outside—or simply enjoy the mountain views between everything else.
Grindstone Lake, Alto Lake, the Lincoln National Forest, and an extensive network of trails provide opportunities for recreation close to the Village, while the surrounding region opens the door to even more exploration.
Our mountain environment is also something we share responsibility for protecting. Visitors are encouraged to plan ahead, respect changing conditions and restrictions, protect natural resources, and travel responsibly while enjoying Ruidoso and the surrounding public lands.

A Destination Shaped by History and Culture
Ruidoso is part of a region with a rich and layered history.
The Mescalero Apache Tribe has deep cultural and historical ties to the Sacramento Mountains and continues to be an important part of the region today. The Mescalero Apache Reservation borders the Lincoln National Forest near Ruidoso and is home to visitor destinations including Ski Apache and Inn of the Mountain Gods.
Lincoln County is also closely connected with the history of the American West. Nearby communities and historic sites tell stories associated with Billy the Kid, the Lincoln County War, Fort Stanton, and generations of people who have shaped this part of New Mexico.
The region is also the home of the real Smokey Bear. The injured black bear cub rescued after a 1950 wildfire in the Capitan Mountains became the living symbol of the national wildfire-prevention campaign. His story is preserved at Smokey Bear Historical Park in nearby Capitan.
Today, Ruidoso’s culture continues through its artists, galleries, performers, musicians, locally owned businesses, community traditions, and year-round events.

Ruidoso’s Horse Racing Heritage
Quarter Horse racing has been closely associated with the Ruidoso area for generations, and Ruidoso Downs Race Track has played an important role in the history and identity of the region.
The All American Futurity, first contested at Ruidoso Downs in 1959, became one of Quarter Horse racing’s most recognized events and a longstanding Labor Day tradition.
Live racing traditionally held at Ruidoso Downs Race Track is taking place at The Downs at Albuquerque for the 2026 season. Beginning in 2027, Ruidoso Downs Race Track has announced that its Quarter Horse Racing Triple Crown Series—including the Ruidoso Futurity, Rainbow Futurity, and All American Futurity—will move to Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas. Related activities announced for the move include the All American Super Select Sale and Ruidoso Downs Hall of Fame activities.
The Billy the Kid Casino, Simulcast, and Cantina dining remain in operation at Ruidoso Downs Race Track.
