Lincoln Lecture Series: Archaeological Investigations at Fort Stanton

  • San Juan Bautista Church at Lincoln Historic Site 988 Calle la Placita Lincoln, NM, 88338 United States (map)

Join Lincoln Historic Site for its monthly Lincoln Lecture Series. Held on the first Saturday of every month from May to October, these lectures delve into fascinating topics from guest lecturers throughout the state and take place in the iconic San Juan Bautista Church.

This month's program is by Charles M. Haecker who will present an “Archaeological Investigation of Mescalero Apache Encampment Sites within the Fort Stanton Military Reservation.” In 2004 NPS Archaeologist Charles Haecker conducted a sample survey of the FSMR in partnership with the BLM-Roswell Area Office. This survey identified various activity areas and features associated with Fort Stanton’s history as a military post, tubercular hospital, and the site of a World War II German POW camp. Also discovered are five Mescalero Apache encampment sites located near the fort. Artifacts recovered from these sites indicate they were occupied between circa 1855-1885. The relative abundance and wide variety of these Euro-American artifacts are indicators of the peaceful relationship that existed between the occupants of Fort Stanton and the Mescalero bands that chose to live nearby. This program will focus on these artifact types and how some of these Euro-American objects were modified to meet the traditional needs of the Mescalero Apaches.

The Lincoln Lecture Series is included with admission of $7/adults and free to children 16 years and younger, people with Native/Tribal affiliations, NM disabled veterans, NM foster families, and MNMF members.
