Weather Awareness

Weather & Flash Flood Safety

Weather conditions can change quickly in Ruidoso. Recent wildfire burn scars can increase the risk of fast-moving flash floods, mudflows, and debris flows during heavy rain. Flooding can also occur downstream even when it is not raining where you are.

Flash Flood Warning or Emergency

Move to Higher Ground

If a Flash Flood Warning or Flash Flood Emergency is issued for your location, move to higher ground and follow instructions from public safety officials. Never walk, swim, or drive through floodwater, and never drive around barricades.

Watch Conditions

Mountain weather can change rapidly. Monitor official weather and emergency information before heading out and while you are on course.

Rain May Be Upstream

Flash flooding can reach an area even when it is not raining there. Storms upstream can quickly send water and debris downhill.

Avoid Flooded Roads

Do not enter flooded roadways, low-water crossings, arroyos, or other areas where water is moving across your route.

Check Current Conditions & Flood Information

Use these official Village of Ruidoso resources for burn-scar flood guidance, road closures, flood conditions, weather alerts, evacuation notices, shelters, and other emergency information.
