Plan Your Ruidoso Adventure: Important Lincoln National Forest Wildfire Safety Guidelines
Lincoln National Forest Implements Stage 2 Fire Restrictions
As of May 7, 2025, Lincoln National Forest has implemented Stage 2 Fire Restrictions due to increased fire danger across the region. These precautions are vital during Ruidoso’s warmer, drier months—and we ask all visitors to travel responsibly and help protect this beautiful landscape.
What Visitors Need to Know
With fire danger rated “Very High,” even small sparks can quickly ignite. To keep everyone safe and ensure continued access to trails, forests, and scenic areas, the following restrictions apply across all three districts of the Lincoln:
Not Allowed (At Any Time):
Campfires and open flames, including charcoal grills and wood-burning stoves.
Smoking, except inside a vehicle, a building, or within a 3-foot cleared area.
Driving off designated roads, unless parking in cleared areas near roads, developed campgrounds, or trailheads.
Fireworks, explosives, and sparking activities.
What Is Allowed:
Propane or LPG-fueled devices (must be in a cleared area, 3 feet radius).
Generators with spark arrestors (also in cleared areas).
Activities under special permit or official fire response duties.
Penalties apply for violations, including fines up to $5,000 and possible jail time.
