Sierra Club Guided Hike – South Fork Trail #19 & Gold Sifting Adventure

  • Alto Lake Recreation Area 854 New Mexico 48 Alto, NM, 88312 United States (map)

Join the Rio Grande Chapter of the Sierra Club for a guided hike along South Fork Trail #19 in the Lincoln National Forest near the historic South Fork Campground area outside Ruidoso.

This moderate hike follows the South Fork of the Rio Bonito and explores the region’s environmental and historical significance, including the impacts of the 2012 Little Bear Fire, the historic Bonito Pipeline, and the mining history of the Nogal District dating back to the 1860s.

Participants will also have the opportunity to try placer gold sifting along the river, making this a unique combination of hiking, local history, and outdoor exploration. Guests interested in gold sifting are encouraged to bring their own kits, which are available locally and online.

Be prepared for stream crossings, changing mountain weather conditions, and approximately 3–4 miles of hiking with moderate elevation gain. Participants should bring sturdy hiking shoes, water, lunch or snacks, sunscreen, and appropriate outdoor gear.

This event is limited to 8 participants and is intended for adults ages 18 and older. No dogs permitted.
