Sierra Club Guided Hike: Bonito Lake Tour

  • Bonito Lake area off Forest Road 107 United States (map)

Discover the natural and historical story of Bonito Lake on this small-group guided hike hosted by the Rio Grande Chapter of the Sierra Club.

Participants will explore the Bonito Lake area, including the abandoned West Lake Campground, which has remained closed since the 2012 Little Bear Fire. The hike circles portions of the lake and leads to the spillway and dam, offering a closer look at the region’s geology, the historic Bonito pipeline, and the evolving landscape of the Lincoln National Forest.

Along the way, the group will also visit Blue Hole—a hidden spring across the Rio Bonito—while discussing the area’s ecological and geological features. The hike includes several stops for interpretation and observation, with the possibility of spotting wild horses in the surrounding terrain.

Because the tour travels through remote forest areas with limited cell service, participants should come prepared with water, sturdy footwear, and weather-appropriate clothing. Hiking poles are recommended for the short scramble near the dam.

Registration is very limited to maintain a small, educational group setting.
