Join Warren Kasper of the Fort Stanton–Snowy River Cave National Conservation Area for a guided hike through one of New Mexico’s most remarkable volcanic landscapes.
Part of a series of free public hikes commemorating the 250th anniversary of American independence, this special outing also celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Valley of Fires Recreation Area. Participants will explore portions of the Kipuka Trail and Malpais Nature Trail while learning about the plants, wildlife, and geology that make the Carrizozo Lava Flow such a unique natural wonder.
The hike lasts approximately 90 minutes and includes minor elevation changes across uneven and occasionally rocky terrain. Comfortable walking shoes, water, and sun protection are recommended.
