Hot Springs of Truth or Consequences
- 529 N. Broadway Street
Truth or Consequences, NM 87901
Truth or Consequences, located 2 1/2 hours from Ruidoso, sits on top of a hot mineral water aquifer. There are 10 different hot springs spas and bathhouses in "T or C". Most of the baths in T or C are open to walk-ins who can pay to soak by the hour. Charmingly restored, these establishments date mostly from the 1920s and ’30s. All but a few offer lodging as well as bathing; visitors seeking in-room private baths will find several to choose from in the downtown area.
Originally named Ojo Caliente de Las Palomas (Hot Springs of the Doves), the community shortened its name to Hot Springs in 1915. In the 1920s and 1930s the town was a mecca for those seeking the hot mineral waters to treat aches and pains, arthritis, and polio.
In 1950, the town changed its name to Truth or Consequences in honor of the 10th Anniversary of the popular NBC radio game show. While there have been efforts to change the name of the town back to Hot Springs, those efforts have failed. Why? There are many towns named "Hot Springs" across the country, but there is only one Truth or Consequences.
