Cedar Creek Area Temporarily Closed Due to Flooding Hazards
Published: July 10, 2025
In the wake of recent monsoonal storms and flash flooding, the U.S. Forest Service has announced a temporary closure of the Cedar Creek area on the Smokey Bear Ranger District in Lincoln National Forest. The closure is in effect from July 9 through September 30, 2025, or until conditions improve and the order is rescinded.
The safety-driven closure affects several popular outdoor destinations, including:
Cedar Creek, Perk Canyon, and Fitness Trail trailheads
Cedar Creek Day Use and Sam Tobias Group Sites
Multiple hiking and biking trails, including Trail 13 North Cedar Creek, Trail 90 Fitness Trail, Trail 92 Perk Canyon, Trail 93 Perk Ridge, Trail 93A Ranger, and more
The U.S. Forest Service is actively coordinating with local and county officials to assess damage, restore access, and ensure public safety.
We understand that these closures may impact your summer hiking plans, but visitor safety remains our top priority. We encourage everyone to respect trail and area restrictions and explore alternate scenic routes around Ruidoso in the meantime. Stay informed—sign up for local weather alerts at CallMeRuidoso.com.
