Spaceport America is the world’s first commercially-built and purposed spaceport. The unveiling of the Spaceport America brand shines light on a visionary project many years in the making. New Mexico’s weather and wide-open spaces have been ideal for the aerospace industry since Robert Goddard, the Father of Modern Rocketry, began conducting research in Roswell in the 1930s. He was followed by Wernher von Braun in the 1940s, and NASA in the 1980s.
Spaceport America is home base for two space tourism companies – Virgin Galactic and Armadillo Aerospace. While this is the “glamour” aspect of the Spaceport, a bigger focus of the facility is on research and development and educational launches.
Please note that while the public may drive out to Spaceport America and gaze at it from Hwy 51, the only way to get up close and personal tour of the facility is to take a tour. For tour info contact Follow the Sun Tours.
